Akeel Nelson is an independent documentary filmmaker and music video cinematographer. His short documentary Clipper Culture explores the community and culture of a barbershop in Jamaica, Queens. Nelson began his media career in 2006 directing, filming and editing commercials for local reggae dancehall parties. The videos were hosted on his Myspace party promotion page as small business venture.
Nelson, a Media and Communications BA candidate at SUNY College at Old Westbury, holds an Associates Degree from Nassau Community College. He is a member of the on-campus T.V. station, OWTV and a founding member of the campus Video Club. His documentary, Clipper Culture, was nominated for a 2011 SUNY Old Westbury Media Arts Celebration Award for Best Documentary. But it was his editing ability in, Last Laugh Promo that won the award for Best Post Production.
